Glass is a material that can be recycled unlimitedly without compromising quality. All glass that is recycled throughout the country is transported to Swedish Glass Recycling in Hammar, Närke. There, the glass is sorted, cleaned and crushed so that it can be used as new raw material again.
When using recycled glass instead of new glass, energy consumption is reduced by 20%.
About 40% of the glass that is recycled is used to make new bottles. Equally - about 40% is used to manufacture insulation for buildings. The rest of the glass goes on export.
In order for the glass to be recyclable, it must be free of ceramics and porcelain, as this destroys the melting process and impairs the glass quality.
Manufacturers are those who produce and use plastic packaging for their products and foods. Manufacturers have a manufacture responsibility.
Each year, approximately 200 tonnes of plastic packaging are placed on the Swedish market. Packaging that encloses the goods we buy.
Adjacent to our homes are either recycling stations or a property collection (waste collection or sorting directly in the bin) where you leave your sorted plastic packaging. They are run by FTI (Packaging and Newspaper Collection). Plastic packaging includes packaging of both soft and hard plastic.
Before the plastic arrives at the plant in Motala, they are packed into a cubic meter large plastic bales.
When the plastic bales arrive at the plant in Motala, the packages are sorted based on plastic variety and possibly based on color. Instead, plastic that cannot be recycled goes to energy recovery.
From the plant the sorted plastic is sent to any buyer. There, it is washed and granulated and becomes recycled plastic raw material that can be used in the manufacture of new packaging or other plastic products. Now we have managed to end the cycle.
Plastic packaging that cannot be recycled in the plant or that has been disposed of in household waste is burnt and turned into energy. This means that they are not recycled into new plastic products - a waste of earth's resources.
