Glass bottles for beverage production — guide to format, material and closure

You have a beverage that needs to be released to the market. The flavor is ready, the label is designed — but the packaging determines whether the product actually reaches the shelf in the right condition. Glass bottles are the first choice for producers of beer, cider, spirits, kombucha and juice, but choosing the format, neck type and closure is more complex than it seems. This guide gives you the decision-making information you need — from glass color and pressure resistance to EU requirements and order logistics.

Glass holds a unique position among packaging materials: it is completely inert, tasteless and infinitely recyclable without loss of quality. For beverage manufacturers looking to communicate premium quality and sustainability, the glass bottle is a difficult one to replace — but the right choice of specifications is crucial to ensure the benefits last all the way from bottling to consumer.

What determines the right glass bottle for your drink?

Glass bottles for beverage production is selected based on three factors: whether the beverage is light-sensitive, what pressure the bottling line actually requires, and which closure is appropriate for the beverage category. These three considerations — not aesthetics — determine which format is actually technically and economically feasible for your production.

Glass is the only common beverage packaging material that is completely inert. It does not react with acids, alcohol or aromas, which is why wine, spirits and premium juices are traditionally bottled in glass. The taste is preserved unchanged throughout the entire shelf life — something neither PET nor aluminum can guarantee in the same way. Glass bottles that meet EU requirements for food contact materials also do not emit any substances that can affect health, composition or taste (Glass Alliance Europe, 2023).

Glass color and UV protection — why brown and green glass is used

The color of the glass is not a design issue but a technical specification. Brown glass blocks up to 99 percent of UV light in the range of 315–400 nm, which protects light-sensitive beverages such as beer, cider and natural wines from photooxidation and flavor deterioration. Green glass provides partial UV protection and is used primarily for wine and beer where the brand identity is linked to the bottle color. Clear glass provides no UV protection at all and is chosen exclusively when the product is not light-sensitive or when transparency is an active selling point — for example, for premium waters, juices with a clear color or distillates.

An IPA brewer who switches from brown to clear bottles to "look more premium" risks flavor degradation after just a few days on the fluorescent lighting of a store shelf. It's a common and costly mistake that can be prevented with the right glass color from the start.

Glass types — soda glass and specialty glass

Almost all glass bottles for beverages are made from soda ash — a mixture of quartz sand, soda ash and limestone. It is a robust, food-grade material with good chemical resistance to acids and alcohol, and it can withstand normal pasteurization at 62–65 °C without cracking. For most beverage manufacturers, soda ash is the obvious choice.

Borosilicate glass is an option for producers with extreme temperature requirements. It can withstand rapid temperature changes of up to 120°C — relevant if you are hot filling directly into glass bottles without pre-cooling, or if your product undergoes high-pressure pasteurization (HPP). Borosilicate glass is more expensive and fewer suppliers offer it for beverage applications, but for premium kombucha with cold-pressed juice admixture, for example, it can be the right choice.

Soda glasses are also available in different weight categories — light, standard and heavy. Light bottles (under 200 grams for 33 cl) reduce shipping and palletizing costs but require more careful handling in the bottling line. Heavy bottles (250 grams and up) give a premium impression and withstand more shocks, but drive up the CO₂ footprint per transport. For most B2B producers in Sweden, standard weight is the right compromise — it is worth requesting the weight per unit in the quotation and calculating the total pallet weight before ordering.

Volumes and formats — which suits your product and line?

Glass bottles for beverages are available in standard volumes from 20 cl up to 1,5 liters. The choice is guided by the beverage category, consumption situation and bottling line — a bottle that requires a manual corker will not work on an automated line without adaptation. Standard volumes are also easier to order, have shorter lead times and lower MOQ than special volumes.

Common volumes for beverage production in Sweden:

  • 20–25 cl — portion bottles for juice, soda and tonic. Suitable for restaurants and hotels.
  • 33 cl — standard format for beer, cider and soft drinks. Universally compatible with most dispensing machines.
  • 50 cl — common for craft beer, kombucha and juice. Provides lower packaging cost per liter than 33 cl.
  • 70–75 cl — wine and spirits standard. Neck finish and weight are adapted to Systembolaget's requirements.
  • 1,0 liter — juices, water and liqueurs. Heavy bottle — check that your line can handle the weight before ordering.

Bottle weight per volume varies greatly between suppliers and manufacturing methods. A 33 cl beer bottle typically weighs 180–250 grams depending on the thickness of the glass. Neck types and closures — technical guide for producers

The neck finish — the top of the bottle — determines what closure can be used and what pressure the bottle can withstand. One of the most common mistakes is to select the bottle and cap separately without verifying compatibility. Improper matching results in leaks, incomplete seals, or blockages in the bottling line.

The most common neck finishes for beverage production, with technical specifications:

  • Crown cork (26 mm) — universal standard for beer, cider and soft drinks. Tight against carbon dioxide. The bottle must withstand at least 6 bar of internal pressure at 20 °C.
  • Screw cap (PP/aluminium, 28–31,5 mm) — juice, water and spirits. Reclosable. Selected when the consumer should be able to close the bottle again.
  • Natural cork or synthetic cork — wine and distillate. Requires corking machine and fits cylindrical neck. Natural cork requires storage on its side to maintain humidity.
  • Swing-top/patent cork (29 mm) — premium beer and kombucha. Rubber or silicone gasket determines tightness — normally withstands 2–3 bar, not heavily carbonated beer.
  • T-cork — spirits and liqueurs. No primary seal — always combined with an external seal.

Crown-top bottles for craft beer should always be specified with a pressure resistance of at least 6 bar — request this in writing from the supplier. Swing-top bottles with rubber gaskets can normally withstand 2–3 bar, which is sufficient for lighter carbonated drinks but not for heavily carbonated beer or soda. If you choose the wrong pressure resistance, you risk corking in stock — a quality and safety problem that costs more to deal with afterwards than to specify correctly from the start.

Always check the neck finish dimensions in millimeters against your bottling machine specification before placing an order. Changing the format without updating the line risks stopping production on day one.

A typical case where the closure choice goes wrong is when the producer starts with aesthetics instead of technology. A simple decision model: start with the beverage category, determine if resealability is required, then check what pressure the product generates. Carbonated beverage above 3 bar → crown cap or specially sealed screw cap. Carbonated beverage below 3 bar → swing-top works. Non-carbonated → screw cap, cork or T-cap depending on the category and target group. The manufacturer of your bottling line should always be the final resort — they know the tolerances of your equipment best and can confirm compatibility in writing.

Food requirements and EU regulations — what applies to glass bottles?

Glass bottles intended for food and beverage use must comply with the EU Food Contact Materials Regulation, which requires that packaging does not release substances that are harmful to health, change the composition of the product or affect taste and smell. For glass, in particular, limit values ​​for lead and cadmium apply (Glass Alliance Europe, 2023). All glass bottles from reputable B2B suppliers come with a Declaration of Compliance (DoC) — always request a DoC when evaluating a new supplier.

Since January 2025, EU Regulation 2024/3190 has been in force, banning bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials. BPA is not found in glass bottles, but the ban affects caps and lids with built-in plastic or epoxy sealing rings. Check that your closure supplier has updated their DoC to comply with the new regulations.

As a producer, it is your responsibility to ensure that the entire packaging system — bottle, cap, sealing ring and any seal — complies with EU food requirements. A glass bottle with a valid DoC combined with a cap without an updated DoC is not compliant as a whole. Request DoC documentation separately for each component and keep them together — in the event of a food inspection, you are expected to be able to present the entire chain immediately.

MOQ, lead times and order logistics

Minimum order quantity (MOQ) for standard formats is typically 500–1,000 units per SKU when ordering from a wholesaler in Sweden. Custom formats require significantly higher volumes — often 10,000–50,000 units — as mold manufacturing is billed separately.

Delivery times to expect: standard bottles from stock are normally delivered within 2–5 working days within Sweden. Direct import from European producer takes 3–6 weeks. Production orders for customized formats take 8–16 weeks.

A common challenge for growing beverage producers is underestimating their glass inventory needs. Glass bottles take up a lot of space and are sensitive in transport — a pallet loss can waste hundreds of bottles. Consolidating packaging and logistics with a single supplier reduces the risk of production downtime in the event of increased demand. In practice, order planning works best with a simple rule of thumb: calculate how many production days an inventory covers and add a safety buffer of 20–30 percent. If you produce 500 bottles per day and have a three-week delivery time from your supplier, you need at least 10,500 bottles in stock to never risk idle downtime — plus the buffer, i.e. 13,000–14,000 bottles. It’s a calculation that often surprises new producers but prevents the most costly production downtimes.

Reuse and return — disposable glass or returnable glass?

Returnable glass is reconditioned at high temperature and is hygienically safe for re-bottling — provided that the bottle is designed for multiple use with the right glass strength. Single-use glass decreased by 18 percent in Sweden in 2023 (Swedish Breweries, 2024). The driving forces are partly consumer preferences towards more sustainable alternatives, and partly price competition from canned formats.

For premium producers, the trend is an opportunity. Glass can theoretically be recycled indefinitely without loss of quality — a property neither PET nor aluminum share. A juice producer that actively communicates that the glass bottle is fully recyclable and is included in the deposit system has a concrete sustainability argument that the "we drink from a can" argument cannot match.

However, returnable glass requires a clear order specification. Bottles intended for multiple use have thicker material and can withstand reconditioning at high temperatures — they are not interchangeable with disposable glass of the same volume and format. If you order disposable glass but market the product as returnable glass, you risk that the bottles will not withstand the reconditioning cycle — for example, when pasteurizing at 75 °C, which standardized returnable glass is designed for but disposable glass is not always. Always communicate the area of ​​application clearly to the supplier so that the correct glass type and material thickness are specified from the start.

How do you choose glass color for beer and craft beer?

Brown glass is the standard choice for beer — it blocks up to 99 percent of the UV light that causes photooxidation and flavor degradation in hoppy beers. Green glass provides partial protection. Clear glass should be avoided for beer to prevent flavor defects and complaints.

How do I know if my neck type and cap are compatible?

Check the bottle neck finish in millimeters (e.g. 26 mm for crown cork) and compare with the cap specification. Always order sample bottles and test caps before production orders — it takes a day and prevents costly production stops in the series.
